To me that is one flaw of the UFC's rules. It kind of neuters the striking game once the fight hits the ground, or once one of the fighters is on the ground.

This has led to various fighters going with the "lay & pray" strategy, of just taking a fighter down via double or single leg take down, and simply hold them down for as long as they can, which will always give them the judgment .

[...] Joe’s thoughts on PRIDE and their infamous rules: There was something extra special about those fights. Part of it was that they were in Japan, and their culture is so much different than ours. The pageantry of the event was off the charts – giant video screen entrances that really built up the hype, and rules that were quite different than we have here. [...]

Let's not forget knees to the head of a grounded opponent. They allowed those, they were awesome and they weren't as brutal as the headstomps or soccer kicks.

Legalize knees to the head of a grounded opponent!

Pride was so much more special than the UFC. It just had such an allure and mystic that the UFC hasn't really had since the beginning of it's shows. In a way Pride going out kind of made a martyr out of it's self.
Stomps to the head really aren't any different than a punch or kick to the head, the only difference being I guess is it doesn't require as much skill.

I always enjoyed listening to Lenne Hardt do her thing. Bruce Buffer is amazing and irreplaceable but it would be cool to hear her introduce the fighters at the beginning of the event like she did in Pride.

Carlos Newton vs Kazushi Sakuraba is a fight that always makes me smile. It's probably my favorite ever and it's not really that brutal.

But yeah, good times. Something about the crowd shutting up and enjoying the fight made it that much more awesome too. The audience seemed to know that two trained badasses were in the ring fighting and that demanded respect. Rampage mentioned this a few times when he came over to the UFC.

You couldn't have a roundless, to-the-end battle between Royce Gracie and Kazushi Sakuraba (just because) now without the crowd ruining the whole experience with their faggy attention spans.

I was pretty sure that Pride [and the rest of Japan - K1, Shooto, etc] didn't allow standup elbows either? Or am I misremembering?
